A legend, a heavy hitter, and a solid newcomer face off in three different music videos, all released in the same week!
We will put their MV’s head-to-head in a no-holds-barred fight to the death!! It will be bloody, folks. It will be emotional. And it will be in Korean. So get your ice cold beer and a hotdog, and prepare yourself for AKPF’s
In the red corner, we have legendary k-pop songstress Lee Hyori. After a hiatus of several long years, the queen has returned with a song and video that say “Bitch, I ain’t got nothin’ to prove to nobody! Flashy choreo? Fuck it. Brightly colored sets? Fuck it. Ridiculous celebrity cameos? Fuck it. When you’re this good (aka ME) you don’t need any of that elementary crap. All I need are two drag queens and a sash.”
Girl KILLS it with style, class, and a healthy sense of self-deprecation in the MV for “Miss Korea.” The editing, musicality, the song itself, everything is top notch. I also really love that instead of lowering herself and trying to compete with all of today’s flashy, dance-electro rookies, she’s doing her own thing and doing it impeccably well.

In the blue corner, we have ab-tastic idol group 2PM. Except, wait a second, there are NO ABS IN THIS VIDEO. What fresh trollery is this, JYP?
Once I got over the initial disappointment in the lack of skin, I have to say that this MV for “Come Back When You Hear This Song,” is not bad. And while the decision to let Chansung sing is still a bit questionable, I think the boys sound pretty alright. Junho and Junsu (Jun.K whatever) specifically sound really decent!
Of all the ridiculous 2PM videos out there, this has got to be my favorite. It’s edited well, staged well, and even though that robot dancing is heinous, they really do look great in suits. Good call, stylist noonas. I won’t delve too far into the horrible message that’s relayed here. “Are all six of your boyfriends selfish assholes? It’s cool, they dedicated this song to you so you should probably stick by them even though your relationship is more of a relationshit. I mean, look at those cool fireworks! And their hair looks so good!”
brb qurl, SM’s calling.
In all honesty, I think it’s a really strong effort, especially considering it’s somewhat of a departure from their previous work.

In the rainbow corner is rookie phenom B1A4! Their new MV for “What’s Happening” is pretty much everything I could want from these adorable noona-killers. Old-timey phones! Printed shorts! Crazy hats! Pillow fights! Baro‘s deep deep voice! And is anyone else reminded of SHINee‘s “Hello” MV when they look at the boyfriend?
Overall, this video seems to be incredibly true to the charm of B1A4, without hitting you over the head. Maybe I’m biased because I’ve loved them since they debuted with “Ok Girl,” but I really feel that this new effort is much closer to the heart of what makes them so great. They’re cute, quirky, trendy, and most of all talented!
Are you there, God? It’s me, k-pop.
I love this video, check it out below and tell us what YOU think!
So who won the MV SHOWDOWN 2013??? My vote goes for Hyori, well, because she’s flawless. Let us know what you think in the comments and don’t forget to follow AKPF on Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr!
