4minute Somehow Continues To Rule The K-pop Charts With “What’s Your Name?”

The Popdust Files: 4Minute, K-pop

When SECRET, T-ara N4, and 4minute all confirmed that they would be releasing new albums within days of one another, not too many people thought that 4minute would turn out to the biggest seller of the bunch. While 4minute is still one of Korea’s most well-known girl groups, their chart history indicated that they had already peaked years ago, while HyunA’s solo career has often overshadowed the group as a whole, leaving most K-pop fans expecting either SECRET or T-ara N4 to win the three way battle.

Now it’s three weeks since 4minute’s new single, “What’s Your Name?,” dropped, and the song is back at No. 1 on the instiz iChart — on both the daily and real-time chart. In the speedy world of K-pop, three weeks at the top would be an achievement for any artist, but it’s especially huge for 4minute. It’s also surprising to see how 4minute has been able to continuously fend off such stiff competition, first from SECRET and T-ara N4, and then from 2PM, Lee Hyori, 4men, and B1A4. If things continue like this, “What’s Your Name?” could end up being the biggest single 4minute’s had in years.

It’s hard to tell just why exactly “What’s Your Name?” is doing so well. The hipster concept isn’t much different to ones already used by Girls’ Generation and T-ara, the song isn’t quite as catchy as some of the other K-pop hits that are out right now, and the production just sounds like a more electronic version of HyunA’s “Ice Cream.” Even the zombie scene in the official music video was already done by T-ara just last year. But for whatever reason, “What’s Your Name?” is a hit, and a big one at that.

Who woulda thought?
