I recently read this article that Ze:A’s Kwanghee felt aesthetically insecure when it came to the other members and their looks. During an episode of “Hello” on KBS, Kwanghee said he felt physically inadequate because of his “beak-shaped nose, and his close together eyes.” He went on to say that even if he got plastic surgery, he would still feel beneath”them in the sense that they all were born with a natural handsome looks and he was not. Fellow member Joonyoung said that he even once saw Kwanghee cry into a pillow one time about his outer appearance.
During an episode of SBS’s “Strong Heart,” a big cut-out of Kwanghee’s pre-surgery face was shown on the show. He quickly crumbled the photo and laughed embarrassingly with the rest of the audience. On a an episode of “Blind Test Show 180 Degrees,” 2PM’s Junho expressed to Kwanghee that he was surprised at how open he was with admitting his surgeries. Kwanghee then cracked the audience up by saying that if he had to do his nose again he would get it a bit more thickened to look more masculine.
I appreciate Kwanghee’s frankness and humor about his plastic surgery past;it’s funny, brave, and respectable. But what bothers me is his glaring insecurities as a man and how much he puts down his God-given looks. We all complain about the way we look. We all wish our noses were pointer, smaller, we wish our eyes were bigger, or blue, we wish our chins were sharper, and our jaws more cut. It’s a part of human nature to want what we don’t have, and to yearn for a prettier or more handsome face or body. For someone to be that insecure about his looks when he wasn’t born deformed in any shape or form saddens me to no end. If he were my child, I would feel intensely hurt that he despised his face that much that he had to go and come back looking like a completely different human being. It makes you realize that there’s so much shallowness and vanity in our culture, specifically Korean culture.

The idol singer has had so much work done on his face that he says he isn’t able to drink certain kinds of alcohol. How sad does that make you? According to a surgery by Trend Monitor in 2009, 1 in 5 women in Seoul have had some kind of procedure done to their face. In Korean society, it’s common for Korean high school girls to get surgery because the earlier you get it done, the more natural it looks as you grow into it. Because of high demands, there are now male-only clinics in Korea that provide plastic surgery for men.
Kwanghee’s relationship with his looks and plastic surgery isn’t a healthy one and I hope his fans aren’t influenced by his physical insecurities. Be grateful for what you look like and your health.
